Challenge:

In the past, ICOM functioned using a piecemeal technology solution built around Microsoft Exchange. Common IT processes were slow, disjointed and inefficient. When Jared Tabler, Vice President of Operations, joined ICOM less than a year ago, he was surprised by how the company’s forward-thinking culture clashed with its unreliable technology. “We knew we needed something better, but upgrading to the newest Exchange Server would have cost us a fortune and would have left us three years behind the latest technology,” said Jared.

Agosto and Google Solution:

Agosto, a Google Apps Reseller, and ICOM worked together and came to a clear conclusion: moving ICOM to Google Apps was the best path forward. Some trail-blazing ICOM employees were already pushing the technology envelope, using their personal Google accounts at work to share files through Google Drive and to create project hubs with Google Sites.

“Over the course of a month, we talked with our employees and Agosto partnered with our technical team to put a migration plan in place,” said Jared. “After just 30 days, all of our employees were set up and working using Google Apps. It was the fastest IT implementation I’ve ever done.”

Results:

Before moving to Google Apps, ICOM wanted employees from each of its three offices to be able to collaborate on projects. Unfortunately, the process of emailing versions back and forth and editing them in silos wasn't working. Today the company edits in real-time using Google Documents, Sheets, Sites and Presentations shared on Google Drive, all of which are included with Google Apps.

Jared notes how Google+ Hangouts, an instant video conferencing tool that is included in Apps, have completely revolutionized the ICOM recruiting process. “Instead of relying on phone screenings, which don’t really convey a candidate’s personality, or flying people to Calgary, which is expensive, we use Hangouts, which cost nothing and bring each prospect’s character to life,” said Jared. “We also like to do group interviews via Hangouts to see how people think and interact. Group collaboration is huge at ICOM, and you get a good sense of that over a video conference. Our candidates love that we’re using new technology and we love that we’re still getting valuable insight about our candidates.”
