Icon Parking is the largest parking facility operator in Manhattan with over 300 special locations and more than 50 years of experience. Icon Parking and Quik Park are part of Citizens Parking, the leader in branded parking services, with five brands, 8,000 associates and 1,200 locations across the United States. Approximately one million cars use Citizens Parking lots every day.
Internet Down Time
Icon has many customers who use its website and mobile app for vehicle request services, monthly parking, online account management and more. If the website is down, revenues go down.
Icon had been using Rackspace to host its website and mobile apps on physical servers, and as the company grew it naturally required more storage space. This resulted in increasing storage fees.
The company needed a storage provider that could house all of its digital content and grow with them over the long term.
Icon’s IT team is great at what they do, but they outsourced their data storage and their experience with cloud services was limited. Icon was under strict time constraints, so they needed a partner who could jump in quickly and guide them through the migration process with zero downtime.
GCP and Agosto
Icon evaluated Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). While both solutions had positive attributes, Google came in as the clear winner for the wide variety of services they offer and for the cost savings compared to Amazon. Once Icon decided to ‘go Google’ they brought in Agosto. With Agosto’s extensive experience and deep knowledge of GCP, a seamless transition was made in less than one month.
“Agosto took the time to understand Icon’s needs – both immediate and long-term – and made strategic recommendations that would allow us to expand and contract our IT infrastructure as needed,” said Jeffrey Rader, Director of Technology at Icon and Quik Park.
Icon’s contract with Rackspace was going to expire, giving Agosto a 30-day window in which to migrate data from 12 physical servers to GCP. The Agosto project team created a blueprint that laid out a comprehensive plan, including the software that would be used to transfer data from Rackspace to GCP; the configuration and size of servers; and improvements such as a load balancer to ensure that users would be unaffected by any interruptions on a server, be it for maintenance or unplanned downtime. In addition, Icon needed to transition from a local configuration of MySQL to Cloud-based SQL-as-a-Service (SQLaaS).
For enhanced data continuity, Agosto recommended that Icon store its data in two separate zones within one region. This strategy provides protection from data being compromised by a natural disaster or malicious intervention.
“When we cutover to GCP, it was as simple as the flip of a switch. It all just worked. That tells you that the Agosto team really knew what they were doing.”
