WHAT ICON WANTED
  • Migrate data from physical servers to the Cloud

  • Improved fault tolerance

  • More flexible, scalable infrastructure

  • Reduce costs for data storage

WHY ICON CHOSE AGOSTO
  • Icon met with teams from Amazon Web Services and Google to explore their cloud services. The decision ultimately came down to price structure and services when they chose Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

  • At Google’s recommendation, Icon contacted Agosto, a tier 1 Google Cloud Partner for their significant experience in helping companies migrate data to GCP.

RESULTS
  • A quick and seamless transition – Agosto migrated Icon’s web and mobile data from physical servers at Rackspace to GCP.

  • Updated infrastructure – Agosto moved Icon’s data out of an environment that was susceptible to outages and issues.

  • Cost savings – Icon significantly reduced hosting fees by going Google.

  • Increased failover protection – uptime has been 100% since moving to Google.

ABOUT

CHALLENGE

Internet down time

Icon has many customers who use its website and mobile app for vehicle request services, monthly parking, online account management and more. If the website is down, revenues go down.

Escalating costs

Icon had been using Rackspace to host its website and mobile apps on physical servers, and as the company grew it naturally required more storage space. This resulted in increasing storage fees.

Flexibility

The company needed a storage provider that could house all of its digital content and grow with them over the long term.

IT resources

Icon’s IT team is great at what they do, but they outsourced their data storage and their experience with cloud services was limited. Icon was under strict time constraints, so they needed a partner who could jump in quickly and guide them through the migration process with zero downtime.

SOLUTION

GCP and Agosto

Icon evaluated Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). While both solutions had positive attributes, Google came in as the clear winner for the wide variety of services they offer and for the cost savings compared to Amazon. Once Icon decided to ‘go Google’ they brought in Agosto. With Agosto’s extensive experience and deep knowledge of GCP, a seamless transition was made in less than one month.

“Agosto took the time to understand Icon’s needs – both immediate and long-term – and made strategic recommendations that would allow us to expand and contract our IT infrastructure as needed,” said Jeffrey Rader, Director of Technology at Icon and Quik Park.

Icon’s contract with Rackspace was going to expire, giving Agosto a 30-day window in which to migrate data from 12 physical servers to GCP. The Agosto project team created a blueprint that laid out a comprehensive plan, including the software that would be used to transfer data from Rackspace to GCP; the configuration and size of servers; and improvements such as a load balancer to ensure that users would be unaffected by any interruptions on a server, be it for maintenance or unplanned downtime. In addition, Icon needed to transition from a local configuration of MySQL to Cloud-based SQL-as-a-Service (SQLaaS).

For enhanced data continuity, Agosto recommended that Icon store its data in two separate zones within one region. This strategy provides protection from data being compromised by a natural disaster or malicious intervention.
